This seems like a really useful set of changes, but I'm having a hard
time justifying merging it for the 1.16 release, given that we were
supposed to be done with that last week.
Would it pain anyone greatly if we just released 1.16 from master in the
next day or so and then merged these changes into master and potentially
included it in a 1.16.1 version later on?
