I would like to as well. The dead code is trying to implement a feature,
so we can remove the dead code, or try to fix it. My investigation lead
me to believe that the feature is not implementable, so the patch just
removes the dead code.

If we don't hear from anyone regarding a proper implementation of the
feature, I suggest applying the patch. Given it is dead code and has
never worked since inception 4 years ago, the risk is zero.
