Good news, AC_C_TYPEOF *is* in autoconf 2.60:

        http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/autoconf/autoconf-2.60.tar.gz

That clears the way to using this macro without having to bump the
version of autoconf we're using.

I think we're still waiting to see if Alan is happy with the patch
