Since I submitted this I came across the patch submission guidelines.  I
could resubmit this following those guidelines, but this change requires
some discussion before being acceptable, so I'm not sure if those
guidelines are applicable or not.  Anyway, I'm happy to resubmit it if
it's helpful.
