I think the terminology is a little confusing here. I think what you're
asking for is the ability to render into a 32bpp surface from the app
perspective, but have the compositor and server know that the scanout is
16bpp?
That's... slightly funky, but not entirely unreasonable I suppose.
Because it's X you can't change root window depth, so you'd have to do
this by exposing the legal scanout depths (actually, Render formats) as
a list on the CRTC, and have started the server at the depth you want to
draw to.
