I don't think it's intended to be used as a shared library, but instead to
allow sites to drop in their own greeter module for greater customization
than allowed via just .Xresources.   I've never heard of any site actually
using it though, and guess it makes more sense when you're getting a xdm
binary and can't just rebuild the whole thing, but it also depends on having
a stable API/ABI between xdm and the greeter module, which I don't think 
we've broken, but also not paid great attention to maintaining.
