Well, I was hoping to free up those options, in case someone finds
something new to add, and remove un/little-used cruft :-)

"autoresume" is quite a lot more descriptive than "file"; we also have
"modfile" which requires an optional file parameter. So there are two
options which require a file, naming one of them "file" wouldn't be
very helpful :-)
