Thanks a lot Alan! Getting these back to the point where they can be
manipulated by mere mortals may encourage people to update them when the
API changes.

Getting that rebased across the xalloc/malloc change was something of an
adventure, but it's a nice clean patch sequence now that should even
bisect. I've tested the new code against xts without finding any (more)
errors. I'm hoping someone will have a chance to review the core changes
so I can get them merged in.
