PowerTop on Linux supplies fantastically useful metrics. The backlight
can be 7W out of 19W just by itself in my experience. Everything else
considered in this post pales next to this.

(Powertop tweaks let me get an hour more out of a given laptop doing
the same things in Ubuntu compared to XP. Use Unix! Save the earth!)
