From what I remember, it looks like the code was randomly copy and
pasted from possibly several places: you claimed in the flags to be
setting many attributes, but most of the WindowAttributes structure was
uninitialised garbage.  Certainly BackPixel wasn't initialised, you were
forcing the colourmap to be zero, etc.
