This looks good, but reviewing it makes me wonder how hard it would be
to not have MAXSCREENS at all and just realloc each time you needed more
space in any of the relevant arrays. It seems like you've got exactly
the hooks you need to make that work, which would mean we wouldn't need
to pass a command line argument, making autodetection 'just work'.
