xset autorepeat problems

hi,

i've recently upgraded my X and xset keyboard commands stopped to work.
in particular the command "xset r rate 300 100" affects only the delay part
of the options. the behaviour is even more weird - when experimenting with
lower delay values it looks as if the correct autorepeat value is set for
first few hundrdes of milisecond and then its turned back to the default slow
one (300 delay is too much though to see this behaviour)...

can anybody reproduce this? are there any hints what can be done?

xorg-server 1.6.5, tested with xset 1.0.3/1.0.4/1.1.0.
