I think we've already busted the 1.7 image_from_pict behaviour,
then we fixed up the API to make it look nice without restoring the
behaviour, this just fixes up the internals with the API, and leave
the image_from_pict API as busted as 1.7.3 has it.

So I'm not sure what Aaron prefers here, since he seemed happy
with the 1.7.3 behaviour which I haven't changed.
