This is the replacement suggested by ajax when he reviewed the
patch I submitted to add || defined(__x86) to one specific call:

The PC98 patch was needed to fix issues with adding the __i386__
definitions in this patch causing the pc98 functionality to be
partially exposed on Solaris since the different files had
different checks (some were just __i386__, others were __i386__
&& platform).
