the rare mouse focus issue

I've had a Xorg focus issue for half a year, but only recently made a
problem report, and in it I tried to describe the problem accurately:

As it seems, almost noone has this issue. I didn't get much of a
reply, so I decided to consult with some of you Xorg developers.

I did some googling and browsed the xorg and xorg-devel list archives,
and collected some other reports which seem to describe more or less
the same symptoms, with a bit of flavouring:

Note the last report, which dates back to 2005-01-27. I find this
surprizing because this issue appeared for me only half a year ago.

I want to get this issue fixed, but I'm not familiar with Xorg
internals or debugging. I'll look up some docs in my interest. If I
understand, very few of you have the ability to (reliably) reproduce
the issue. So if anyone wants me test something, I'll gladly follow
instructions. Meanwhile I'm rebuilding Xorg in debug mode in case I'll
need to do some GDBing.
