automake's silent-rules

Twas brillig at 18:35:31 25.08.2009 UTC-04 when cloos at jhcloos.com did gyre and gimble:

 JC> Is there a consensus preference for or against make verbosity?

From the StnR point of view 'silent by default' looks preferable.
