hw/sun is used to build the Xsun server (not the same Xsun we ship in
Solaris, but the old Xsun from the X Consortium). For 6.8 this note
was added to README.Solaris:

   2. Also on SPARCs, you may be able to build the old deprecated Xsun*
servers for older cg* graphics devices by adding "#define XsunServer
YES" or "#define Xsun24Server YES" or "#define XsunMonoServer YES" to
xc/config/cf/host.def. These servers are no longer maintained nor
supported and may not build in this release.

Relevant bug was: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1134

If you look at the patch you'll see even before that they were deprecated by
XFree86.

I don't know anything about hw/sunLynx - I assume it was for LynxOS on Sun
hardware, but have never seen that used.
