I'm pleased to announce the release of libvdpau 0.4. In addition to a
couple of documentation updates, this release adds infrastructure for
libvdpau to query the VDPAU back-end driver name from the X server using
version 1.2 of the DRI2 extension.

Support for the new DRI2 protocol is on track to be in the xserver 1.8
series. This protocol will allow libvdpau to load the appropriate driver
back-end on a per-X-screen basis, which in turn will allow VDPAU to operate
correctly on X servers where different X screens are driven by cards from
different vendors that have different VDPAU implementations. To enable
this support in libvdpau, you must install dri2proto version 2.2 or higher.
Otherwise, it will fall back to the default of "nvidia".
