Welcome, John!

The basic process (as I understand it) is that students will submit
project proposals through google's Summer of Code website. Then, we
(the cairo project) will rank the cairo proposals from most favorable
to least favorable. Finally, google will award some number N of
projects to cairo so that we can accept the top N project submissions.
And since this is cairo's first time to participate in Summer of Code,
we don't really have any basis for guessing how large N might be.
As for recommendations for you, then, you'll want to do your best to
ensure that we rank your proposal well. Some of the things you can do
to help with that are to talk talking now, (here on this list), about
the project you're interested in. As we get to know you and your
interests more, and as you get started learning more about the
specific project you're interested in---all of those things together
will help you convince us that you will complete a successful
project.
So, please feel welcome here. We look forward to discussing things
more with you.
To start off, why don't you tell us which of the suggested cairo
Summer of Code project ideas look most interesting to you:

And then ask us any questions you might have about specific projects.
And most of all, have fun with cairo!
