I don't think this needs to be a Summer of Code project. There's not
much code to write there. Someone needs to just sit down and do it.

I don't think this is similar to font hinting at all. For font hinting,
one has the entire font glyph data at hand. We already have a mode for
this in cairo: it's called ANTIALIAS_NONE. Again, this is one of those
features that keeps coming up (not incidentally, by you), but nobody
cares enough to go ahead and implement it. No sure it would make a
great SoC project.

Throwing problems we cairo developers have no solution for at students
and hoping that they come up with a solution for it doesn't work.

In all the ideas above you try to imply that a majority of people don't
want what cairo currently does. You have a very skewed idea of majority
or cairo users IMO. Sure, go ahead and use toy API. But if you want
something that works with other languages, you know where to look at.
Oh, and the toy API is not deprecated BTW.

Ok, this paragraph suggests that you don't know much about complex text
rendering. In that case I can't blame you for pushing for more toy text
API.
All those said, after my recent user-font code lands, I will implement a
pangocairo user-font font face to plug pango into cairo's toy text API.
