Unfortunately, there are still bugs left in EXA which prevent it from
working 100% correctly with the option enabled, see

I think the overall impact is relatively small (core font rendering in
the former case and possibly in the latter as well) compared to the
performance benefits of having it enabled, so I see two basic options:
* Keep it enabled by default and document in the release notes to
try disabling it when encountering corruption such as the one
described in the above bug reports.
* Leave it disabled by default again and document in the release
notes that enabling it may improve performance with EXA but may
also cause visual corruption in rare cases.
