I tried 'sudo agetty --no clear tty2 Linux &' it gave the out put '[1] 2359' tried ctrl-alt-f2 and it just gave a blank screen. Ctrl-alt-f8 returned to previous display, not sure what that command is doing but it doesn't do anything unless I press one of the other f keys and get blank screen. I don't think I've ever messed with something so much and had no clue what it does as I have with x org. Also log out doesn't give any option for non GUI, just 'last session' 'x client script' which logs into GUI 'cinnamon' and'cinnamon software rendering'. Tired ctrl-alt-f(keys) and ctrl-alt-t to open terminal but nothing happens. Also tried sudo /etc/init.d/mdm stop, per the navidia instructions but had the same result. I've googled commands to stop xserver but those are the only ones that I've found, I may be missing some little detail that I did last time but I don't think so. If any one has advice for stopping MDM so I can install the nvidia driver I would appreciate it. Sounds as if Mint isn't running any getty, nor autospawning them m( (Maybe it's worse, and they don't install any getty providers by default...) Try whether you can run "sudo agetty --noclear tty2 linux &" That should get you a TTY on ctrl+alt+f2. Notice that there are many getty daemons and I have no idea which are provided/installed my Mint. Do not quit the display manager from a running GUI session, since that will simply kill the session (unclean exit) Instead logout (so you see the login screen), then move to another VT (with a login shell), login there and quit the DM from there.
