Hi again, so I successfully installed my geforce gt730 driver once before but now I'm needing to reinstall it. I'm running mint 17.1 cinnamon (same as before...) and can't get xorg to stop. Last time sudo service mdm stop worked, but now when I enter that command I just get a black screen with no console. Tired ctrl-alt-f(keys) and ctrl-alt-t to open terminal but nothing happens. Also tried sudo /etc/init.d/mdm stop, per the navidia instructions but had the same result. I've googled commands to stop xserver but those are the only ones that I've found, I may be missing some little detail that I did last time but I don't think so. If any one has advice for stopping MDM so I can install the nvidia driver I would appreciate it. Was what finally worked for me). Now I'm having a settings issue, no matter what I've tried I can't get fonts to show up nicely. I've tried changing settings in fonts under system settings, nvidia x server settings in the nvidia program. I'm running two monitors and one (Samsung via HDMI shows everything including fonts beautifully and HP via vga which has the problem). Video, images and everything looks good except fonts. The driver wants a default resolution for the HP of something like 640x480, and fonts do look good that way but nothing fits. With 1000x800 fonts get bad. I edited the xorg.conf to 1000x800 for the HP monitor but for some reason when the screen saver comes on it switches back to 640x480 even though I can't find anything in the settings with that resolution. Any help would be great, I'm almost ready to just try buying a different monitor even though there isn't really anything wrong with this one. If not, and it's LCD, image will look horrible (the driver simply scales 1000x800 to some native resolution of that screen, eventually even 640x480) 640x480 is VGA - an industrie standard and the ultimate failsafe (since something that doesn't support VGA is simply unsopported) What's the output of "xrandr -q" and -to be sure- the model description of the HP monitor? Set it to 1280x1024 b) if you can, use the DVI connection. It will not only provide you a better image, but likely also bypass this problem. That's (likely) because the monitor is actually still at 640x480 (the line with the asterisk) What happens then is that the GPU scales down 1280x1024 to 640x480 and send that to the monitor which blows it up to 1280x1024 again. The result is -expectably- suboptimal. Changing the logic resolution won't resolve any of your issues.
