Hello,

I haven't received comments on my patch for https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6796
(
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=8275), so I'm asking for help here. Sorry for the noise towards the beginning of the bug report (filed last spring), but the basic problem is that "ati" does not give control to "radeon" with many X300/X600/X700/X800-series cards (16 duplicates in Ubuntu's bug tracker), thus giving no X for many newbies. A symptom of the problem is that "(WW) ATI: PCI Mach64 in slot 1:0:0 could not be detected!" is seen in
Xorg.0.log, which led me originally to see why it's even thinking there should be a Mach64 there.

I'm in no way familiar with any of
X.org code, so I'm just proposing something since no-one else is doing it. I've heard about the autoconfiguration branch of
X.org (to be included in 7.3)... could that perhaps be a reason why people are not interested in this? Is the ati wrapper going away then? Whatever the case, if you can figure out a solution with the help of my findings, I'd be more than happy. And if you need any more information / debug output, just tell.
