Unfortunately, your guess was right and unfortunately I have to make use of 
the nVidia driver...

I have already read the manpage and xrandr sounds good.
The nVidia driver doesn't support all the xrandr options, right?

So I'll have a more detailled look on xrandr once again, but I think I need 
another way to access the xserver.
