external display switching broken on Thinkpad (i830M)

I have an IBM Thinkpad X30 laptop with i830M graphics.
With XFree and xorg 6.7.0 I could switch between the
built-in LCD display and an external display with Fn-F7.
Upgrading to xorg 6.8.0 (Gentoo) has broken this: pressing
Fn-F7 causes the display to momentarily switch to the 
external output, then to switch back to the LCD.  Reverting
to 6.7.0 fixes the problem.  If I am not running X, then
video switching behaves properly.

Is this a known bug?  (It is similar to
