<pre>to clarify "switching to VT doesn't seem to make a change":
the monitor stays in standby mode/black (off, *not* on - so *not* simply
blanking)
had related issues where switching to VT and back revived the screen-output
but this is persistent: the box has to be rebooted and/or turned off to be
usable again
