I do the same thing. I have manually downloaded the linux-mainline PKGBUILD
and included files from AUR that I've modified to use the 3.13r3 kernel with
this patch (I think I grabbed it when it was 13rc1 or 2, I see it's updated now
to rc4).
As long as I don't clear out the files, and just run makepkg from inside the
same directory, it untars the kernel tarball but it doesn't overwrite the
compiled pieces. Seems to work, it only recompiled the files that change for
me.
The first time I do it in a clean directory it takes a long time, but
subsequent runs are fine as long as I don't start fresh.</pre>
