I'm having the same problem (glxgears running at about 840 fps), but sometimes
redrawing hangs when I switch desktops.

Hardware is a RV630 (Radeon HD 2600), X is 1:6.13.1-2 on AMD64. If needed, I
can supply xorg.conf and Xorg.log
