I also get crashes, exactly as described here and in the forums.

1.8.0 works fine.  1.8.1 and 1.8.1.901 will segfault at random.

Gentoo Linux AMD64
Kernel: 2.6.34
GPU: ATI Radeon HD4870 (R770)
GPU driver: xf86-video-ati from Git
Mesa: 7.8.1

I'm not using KMS, but UMS.  KMS doesn't crash but I don't want to use it
because it's too slow to be useful.
