I would say, that you don't have modesetting enabled:

Don't know if it's not enabled in your kernel or in your libdrm. Also don't
load any frame buffer driver and remove "vga= " from your boot loader options
if you use these. If you want to be able to switch to the console make sure you
load "fbcon".
