TFT goes into suspend with radeon driver

Hi there!

I cannot get X to run on a friend's machine I just upgraded. That is, I do
not get any errors and probably X is running fine, but the display goes
into suspend mode immediately. I replaced the TFT with a CRT monitor, and
it also shows nothing and complains about bad frequencies. It happens both
with and without xorg.conf. And also with the radeonhd driver, but that is
not suited for this graphics adapter. With vesa, the same happens, and
additionally the system freezes, I cannot switch to a text console (even
after Alt-SysRq-R). fglrx is no longer an option with this card.
I am out of ideas (apart from replacing the graphics adapter), and hope you
can help me. Any insights are greatly appreciated.

The system runs an up to date Gentoo Linux. These are the specs:

wonko at tanja ~ --> uname -a
Linux tanja 2.6.30-gentoo-r5 #4 SMP PREEMPT Mon Oct 19 23:43:54 CEST 2009
x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4000+ AuthenticAMD
GNU/Linux

wonko at tanja ~ --> lspci|grep ATI
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV505 [Radeon X1550
Series]
02:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV505 [Radeon X1550
Series] (Secondary)

Software versions:
x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.6
x11-base/xorg-server-1.6.3.901-r2
x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-6.12.4 (also tried 6.12.1-r1)
x11-drivers/ati-drivers (fglrx) is not installed as it does not work with
this card, so no fglrx.ko module is loaded together with radeon.ko.
