can you attach register dumps using radeontool
(http://cgit.freedesktop.org/~airlied/radeontool) before running with R4xxATOM
and after?

(as root):
(start with broken state)
./radeontool regmatch '*' > before.dump
(switch to R4xxATOM)
./radeontool regmatch '*' > after.dump
