Can you try any of the other 1280x1024 modes and see if they work any better,
you should have at least 4:

(II) RADEON(0): Modeline "1280x1024"x60.0  108.00  1280 1328 1440 1688  1024
1025 1028 1066 +hsync +vsync (64.0 kHz)
(II) RADEON(0): Modeline "1280x1024"x75.0  135.00  1280 1296 1440 1688  1024
1025 1028 1066 +hsync +vsync (80.0 kHz)
(II) RADEON(0): Modeline "1280x1024"x71.9  133.00  1280 1368 1504 1728  1024
1027 1034 1070 -hsync +vsync (77.0 kHz)
(II) RADEON(0): Modeline "1280x1024"x59.9  109.00  1280 1368 1496 1712  1024
1027 1034 1063 -hsync +vsync (63.7 kHz)

Another option would be to try a cvt mode or a reduced refresh rate.  Do either
of the following modes help?
