Slow 3d performance with Radeon 9250

Whenever a GL program is run I get this message:
"libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x5c"

3d programs seem to underperform quite badly.  Nexuiz for example 
bounces between 30-1 fps depending on the context (and I am using 
about the lowest settings possible).  Glxgears runs at about 495 
fps.
