X log from crash

xserver (v 1.4.0.90-r3 from portage) crashes on startup using xf86-video-ati
from git.

Specs:
HP Alphaserver DS20L (dual 833 MHz EV68s)
Radeon X1550 PCI (RV516)

gdb reveals the crash occurs in atombios_dac_detect in radeon_drv.so.
