In particular OpenBSD/vax doesn't support shared libraries.

This isn't the correct way of using a library built by the module. It assumes it is installed. The "../" is always bad news in a makefile. I recall going through this scenario in libpciaccess with the help of reviewers and the final code turned out to be:
