I was looking in the wrong place, server 1.2 that was shipped is not in "server-1.2-branch".<BR>
It's on master with tag "xorg-server-1.2". The modes code was added just after 1.2 was shipped.<BR>
Recent versions of the mode code don't compile with server 1.2.<BR>

I have resubmitted the patch with different explanations and one change.<BR>
