I assume a sed conversion would have the same issue if it was left out
of EXTRA_DIST & CLEANFILES.
When we did the Imake -> automake conversion and had to convert all the
old Imake rules that used cpp for all the man pages, we generally used
sed in the modules that just needed string replacements in man pages,
but xdm is one of the ones that used #ifdef's so had to stay with cpp.
