Right, fortunately the API change is much smaller this time -- it only
affects the initialization of the key and not the usage. Turns out that
wrapping all of the operations in nice functions makes changing the
underlying implementation dramatically easier, who knew?

I'd like to think of this change as just completing the existing
abstraction you started?
